Ensure that you wear appropriate clothing, shoes and hat for the chosen walking environment.
Do not attempt to walk for assistance in remote areas. It is imperative that you remain with the vehicle.
Tell someone where you are walking, leave a trip description in your vehicle or use an intentions book if available. This will aid rescue in the event of a mishap.
Longer walks require specialist preparation. For day walks, the following list is a guide:
Backpack
Waterproof matches.
Appropriate map
Small torch
Compass.
Mirror for signalling.
Full water bottle, belt fitted is best.
GPS.
Whistle.
Rain Jacket.
Small amount of high-energy food.
Knife (sheath or pocket).
